Rare Spodumene

Rare Spodumene: Two of the best-known varieties of spodumene as gemstones are hiddenite and kunzite.

Spodumene is indeed used as a gemstone and is known by different trade names depending on its color. Two of the best-known varieties of spodumene as gemstones are hiddenite and kunzite.

Hiddenite is the green variety of spodumene and is relatively rare. It takes its name from William Earl Hidden, an American mineralogist who discovered it. Hiddenite is valued for its vivid green color ranging from yellowish green to emerald green. It is used in the manufacture of jewelry, including rings, necklaces and earrings.

Kunzite is the pink to lilac variety of spodumene. It was named in honor of George Frederick Kunz, an American mineralogist and gemologist who helped popularize this stone. Kunzite is valued for its soft, feminine color, ranging from pale pink to lilac. It is used in the creation of jewelry, especially pendants and bracelets.

Both of these varieties of spodumene are relatively soft on the Mohs scale of hardness, which means they can be prone to scratching and therefore require some care when handling and wearing them. It is advisable to consult a qualified jeweler for specific information on the care and enhancement of spodumene stones.
